In this blog post, we dive deep into the much-anticipated Tata Curvv Diesel variant, which we recently got our hands on during an exclusive media drive in the scenic hills of Goa. While there’s been a lot of talk about the tightening regulations around diesel cars due to the upcoming BS6 and BS7 norms, many die-hard diesel enthusiasts still swear by the performance and efficiency of diesel engines.

For those of you who are curious about how the Tata Curvv Diesel performs, we’ve got you covered. From engine specifications to transmission performance, real-world mileage to driving dynamics, we’ll cover everything. If you’re considering a mid-size SUV, Tata Curvv Diesel should be on your radar. So let’s get started.

Diesel Enthusiasts Rejoice: The Tata Curvv Diesel

Despite the growing scrutiny on diesel engines, there’s still a dedicated fan base that loves the torque, efficiency, and reliability of diesel vehicles. Tata has answered their call with the Curvv Diesel, a vehicle that promises improved performance, enhanced refinement, and a smooth driving experience.

The Curvv Diesel is powered by Tata’s 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine, which also does duty in the Nexon and Safari. However, in the Curvv, Tata has made several improvements, from tuning to refinement, making this an exciting option for diesel lovers.

Engine & Transmission: Turbo Power and Refinement

Tata Curvv Diesel is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine that generates 118 BHP and 260 Nm of torque. The power delivery is quite impressive, especially when the turbo kicks in, providing a powerful thrust that makes driving uphill a breeze.

One of the most notable changes in the Curvv Diesel is the introduction of Tata’s DCA (Dual-Clutch Automatic) Transmission. Previously, we saw the DCA in the Tata Safari, but this is the first time it’s being paired with the 1.5-liter diesel engine. The DCA transmission offers seven-speed automatic shifting, which is a major improvement over the six-speed manual variant.

During our drive, we tested the car in various conditions, including some uphill stretches. While the engine does require a bit of extra throttle at lower speeds, it really shines once the turbo spools up, delivering seamless power. The gear shifts are smooth, especially from the third gear onwards, and by the time you hit sixth or seventh gear, you can barely feel the transitions.

Performance in Real-World Driving Conditions

Driving in the Hills

We tested the Curvv Diesel in the hills of Goa, and its performance was quite satisfying. Whether it was climbing steep inclines or navigating sharp turns, the car handled the terrain effortlessly. The 260 Nm of torque is more than adequate for such conditions, providing ample thrust without feeling underpowered.

Despite the ground clearance of 208 mm, body roll was minimal, and the vehicle maintained a strong grip on the road, even at higher speeds. This is crucial for an SUV, especially when driving on twisty roads.

Transmission Performance

The seven-speed DCA transmission feels well-tuned for this diesel engine. At lower speeds, especially in the first two gears, you may feel slight jerks, but as soon as you hit the third gear, the transition is barely noticeable.

This is where Tata has made real strides with the Curvv Diesel. The engine feels refined with significantly fewer vibrations compared to previous diesel models like the Nexon. It’s a great step forward for Tata, and anyone familiar with their older diesel engines will definitely appreciate the improvements in both performance and refinement.

Mileage: Impressive Fuel Efficiency

We drove the Curvv Diesel for about 42 kilometers in Sports Mode, and it gave us an average mileage of 12 km/l. In real-world city driving, you can expect this figure to rise to around 15-16 km/l, which is quite good for a vehicle of this size and class.

For those who prioritize fuel economy, Eco Mode should push the mileage up to about 18 km/l. While this is slightly lower than what the Nexon Diesel offers (around 20 km/l), it’s still impressive for an SUV in this segment.

Features: Fully Loaded from Base to Top-End Variants

The Tata Curvv Diesel is available in the same variants as the petrol version, namely: Smart, Pure, Creative, and Ampling. The top-end variant, Compli Plus A, is packed with features like a panoramic sunroof and the seven-speed DCA transmission.

Even the base variant, starting at ₹11,50,000 (ex-showroom), offers a host of features, making it one of the most feature-rich SUVs in this price range. If you’re looking for value for money, the Pure S variant, priced around ₹13,20,000, is a great option, offering most of the features without breaking the bank.

At the top end, the Ampling variant priced at around ₹19,00,000 (ex-showroom) offers everything from ventilated seats to ADAS Level 2 features, making it a strong competitor in the SUV market.

Driving Experience: A Smooth Operator

Our time behind the wheel of the Tata Curvv Diesel was enjoyable, to say the least. The engine refinement is much improved, and the turbo boost brings a level of excitement that diesel lovers will appreciate. The car handles beautifully, whether you’re on city roads or tackling mountainous terrain.

Additionally, the DCA transmission adds another layer of comfort, making daily commutes and long road trips a lot more enjoyable. The suspension setup is well-tuned, offering a comfortable ride without sacrificing handling.

Conclusion: Is the Tata Curvv Diesel Worth It?

If you’re in the market for a mid-size SUV with a diesel engine, the Tata Curvv Diesel is definitely worth considering. With a powerful engine, smooth DCA transmission, and a host of features, it offers great value for money. Its impressive fuel efficiency and robust performance make it a solid choice for both city driving and long road trips.

So, if you’re someone who’s looking to keep a car for 5-10 years, with reliable engine performance and all the latest tech features, the Tata Curvv Diesel should be on your test drive list. Head to your nearest Tata showroom, take a test drive, and see for yourself how this SUV handles.
